Secure the Model, Secure the Business: Cybersecurity After AI

AI didn’t arrive in cybersecurity. It quietly rewired the assumptions cybersecurity has relied
on for decades: that systems behave predictably, that inputs are separate from the system, and that failures are mostly traceable to a human decision or a software defect.
With AI, the boundary blurs. Your asset is no longer just an application; it’s models, prompts, agents, pipelines, and (crucially) the data that shapes outputs. Meanwhile, attackers get scale: more convincing fraud, faster recon, and automated iteration.
That is why Cybersecurity and AI can’t be treated as parallel workstreams. They are the same risk surface viewed from two angles.
NIST’s emerging “Cyber AI Profile” usefully frames the problem in three moves:
Secure AI System Components
Treat AI like critical infrastructure, not a feature. The supply chain expands: models, datasets, third-party APIs, compute, and embedded dependencies. The uncomfortable point is this: training and inference data are part of your supply chain. If you don’t know the provenance of data, you don’t know the integrity of the system.
Use AI for Defense, Without Automating Trust
AI can compress time in detection and response, but immature tooling can also multiply errors at machine speed. If you’re adopting AI in security operations, build the discipline to measure it: precision/recall, drift, override rates, and downstream impact. “It flagged it” is not a control.
Thwart AI-enabled attacks
Deepfakes, tailored spear-phishing, agent-assisted social engineering, and rapid vulnerability discovery are not edge cases; they’re productivity gains for adversaries. Many of these won’t look novel in logs; they’ll look like your normal business communications, just more convincing and more frequent.
So What Should Organisations Actually Do This Quarter, Not In A Strategy Deck?
Start with governance: define ownership for AI security risk (not just the AI team and not just security).
Inventory AI assets properly: models, prompts, agents, data flows, and vendor-provided components.
Bring supply chain controls up to AI reality: require vendors to disclose model/data scope, support incident response, and enable meaningful transparency.
Adjust monitoring and incident response: capture AI-specific artifacts (model logs, inference traces, provenance metadata), so forensics is possible.
Train people for the new persuasion layer: staff need current drills for deepfakes, AI-enabled phishing, and chatbot-mediated manipulation.
Use established threat vocabularies: map likely adversary techniques and test them through red-teaming.
Cybersecurity and AI are not future risks. It’s the present condition of operating systems that can generate, decide, and persuade at scale.
